James grew up in Decatur, Alabama and went to high school in Raleigh, NC.
James is a graduate of St. John's College in Annapolis, MD, "the Great Books school", where he basically majored in philosophy. He worked in the original Borders Book Shop in Ann Arbor, MI, and moved to Atlanta in 1985 when they built their third store in Buckhead. That is where he met his future and current wife Barbara Swint, who is also a writer, mostly of screenplays.
He worked at CNN from 1997 to 2004, where he wrote his only (self)published novel NAKED PRESIDENT, AN ALTERNATE HISTORY, which is still available on Amazon. Barbara and James started their own book and video store in 2004 called MENTAL STIMULATION, but they had to shut it down at the end of 2006. Since then James has been working at a small law firm in Decatur, Georgia, and has written continuously for the-five-hundred since 2011.
