Java Monkey Speaks features Monique Bandong

October, you've been so great. We've laughed, we've cried and we are going to laugh again tonight with our feature Monique Bandong!

In 2014, Monique Bandong’s manuscript The Girl I Never Met was published after it won The BookLogix Young Writer’s Contest. In 2017, the rap video she co-produced about staying safe abroad won the Council of International Educational Exchange (CIEE) Safety Video Contest. This summer, she graduated from Oglethorpe University with a degree in English.

After watching a great deal of Netflix comedy specials, she thought “hey, I could maybe do that,” and has been performing stand-up comedy for over a year. Her humor has been described as self-deprecatory, but she disagrees.

“Sometimes I think about quitting stand-up, but then I realize it’s the only interesting thing about me on paper. Like without it, I’m what? A barista who likes yoga and reading? That’s half of metro-Atlanta.”

Join us tonight to hear a 25-minute set from Monique, who enjoys pineapples on her pizza and the sound of her own heckin’ voice.
